Here we highlight some of our recent project milestones.

Sakaka

Sakaka solar power plant is KSA’s first utility scale renewable energy installation. Sakaka Station, developed under the landmark National Renewable Energy Program and executed by REPDO (Renewable Energy Project Development Office), represents a major leap in diversifying the national energy mix and working towards a more sustainable energy future for Saudi Arabia.

The solar plant occupies 6.2 square kilometers and includes 1.2 million solar panels. With a production capacity of 300 megawatts, Sakaka has the potential to power 45,000 households and contribute to offsetting over 500 thousand tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Sakaka is the result of an investment partnership between Acwa Power and Algihaz Holding.

King Faisal Hospital Substation

Delivered 10 months ahead of schedule, Algihaz Contracting completed the fastest ever construction of a power substation for King Faisal Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The project, requiring construction of a 110/13.8kv substation, including the building, sub-line equipment, installation, testing and commissioning, was completed in 14 months – 10 months ahead of schedule.

The purpose of the new substation for King Faisal Hospital was to improve the power supply to the hospital, which had recently constructed a new building and needed increased capacity. A fast-track project from the outset, one of the major challenges for Algihaz was the requirement to supply temporary power to the building in case of delays.

Keys to project success included:

  • Concentration of key resources on the project – 2 daily shifts of a 70-person electrical team
  • Meeting milestones – rapid finalizing of civil works allowed time for early testing and commissioning
  • Client support – a positive relationship with the client expedited the approvals process

Not only did Algihaz Contracting complete the construction of the King Faisal Hospital Substation prior to the schedule and within budget, we delivered the project with zero punch list.

Hawar Subsea Cabling

The purpose of this challenging project to install subsea cabling from Bahrain to Hawar Island is to supply electricity to the island and to connect it to the overall country power network. Hawar Island is located in the Gulf of Bahrain, 25km offshore from Bahrain and 12km from Qatar. The Hawar Subsea project is a joint venture between Algihaz Contracting and Enshore Subsea, is valued at over 500M SAR and is led by the Saudi Fund for Development.
Planned to be undertaken in two phases, the first phase calls for the installation of 3 subsea circuits, each 25km in length, followed by the underground installation of 3 circuits, each 5km long. Environmental consultants will be employed to ensure the safety of mammal and birdlife throughout the project. The team will complete the geotechnical seabed surveys before commencing cabling works during Q4 2021, with a completion date set for Q2 2022.

Mashair Mecca Substation

Delivered in 2015 on a fast-track 22-month schedule, the 380 kv Mashair substation provides additional energy capacity for the Haram area in Mecca. With Algihaz Contracting as the prime contractor, the scope of work included planning and engineering design, procurement, execution, testing and commissioning.
Project challenges included a very tight time frame for a significant scope of work. Additionally, logistics were extremely challenging due to the project’s location in Mecca with many restrictions on construction and transportation of equipment. Project execution required complex coordination of international supplies from over 10 countries. Finally, the site itself, located in a mountainous region with rocky soil, created challenges for excavation and required specialized expertise and equipment.

Keys to project success included:

  • Sound financial position
  • Expedited delivery of equipment by support company
  • Allocation of resources – 2 16-hour shifts during peak construction phase

The successful project was delivered on time and on budget, with the handover ceremony attended by the Prince of Mecca and Chief of the Ministry of Energy. Since its handover, the substation has achieved a stellar safety rating with over 2 million Zero Accident Hours.

The Smart Metering Project

The Smart Metering Project, launched by the Saudi Electricity Company, was a year-long, nation-wide push to replace 10 million old mechanical power and water meters with new smart digital meters. Algihaz, with Chinese partner, CET, was contracted to install 2 million residential and commercial smart meters in Mecca and the southern portion of the county. Mobilizing quickly despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Algihaz was able to achieve record installation time in Mecca City, ahead of schedule and before all other locations.

Key benefits of the transition to smart meters for the end user include:

  • Improved efficiency, with the ability to monitor consumption in real time
  • Better customer experience, immediately accessible through smart phone app
  • Accurate data, with fully automated readings and billing
  • Optimization, with the ability to adjust consumption to maximize efficiency

Key benefits for the utility, Saudi Electricity Company include:

  • Digital transformation enables better customer service
  • Increased sales
  • Ability to restore and disconnect power remotely and immediately
  • Fully automated meter reading and billing process

Tabuk Substation

Algihaz Contracting provided all design, engineering, material procurement, quality management, factory inspection/testing, logistics, construction, site inspection, testing and commissioning for the construction and delivery of the new Tabuk 380/132/33kV BSP and associated facilities. The purpose of the project was to connect the Tabuk area to the Saudi unified electricity network and to be the linking point for a proposed electricity connection between Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

This very large power construction project was executed on a tight time schedule – 24 months for 380 KV level and 27 months for 550 KV GIS equipment. Challenges included the first supply of 550 KV GIS equipment in Saudi Arabia to be capable of the connection with HVDC station for the connection between Saudi & Egypt. Additionally, the site conditions were hard rock requiring blasting and complicated civil works.

Algihaz Contracting’s comprehensive project plan and management strategies, combined with strong financials, an effective team and expert resources were keys to the success of the project.

Al Fateh Underground Cabling

This challenging project, Algihaz Contracting’s first in the Bahrain market, involved a complicated underground power upgrade required for the extension of Al Fateh Street, the largest and most crowded thoroughfare in Bahrain City. Public and workforce safety were key challenges of the project.

The project was completed in two phases. Phase 1 required the installation of a 220kv circuit 2.5km in length. The second phase involved the installation of two 66kv underground cables with a total length of 1/5km.

Even with a tight, 9-and-a-half-month schedule under contract, Algihaz was able to successfully complete the project one month ahead of schedule.
